Season: Mountain bananas are grown at altitudes above 250 meters. The main growing areas are in the central mountain regions of Nantou, such as Jiji, Zhongliao, and Mingjian.
Origin: Jiji, Nantou
Features: Mountain bananas are cultivated in mountainous areas, where the cooler environment extends their growing period to 13-18 months, 5-8 months longer than bananas grown at lower altitudes. Growing on slopes makes harvesting difficult and the growth slower, resulting in production costs three times higher than those for lowland bananas. However, the large day-night temperature difference and well-drained soil in the mountains result in a more intense aroma, higher sweetness, and a firmer, chewier texture.
- The key to distinguishing mountain bananas from lowland bananas is the appearance of the stem and end. Mountain bananas have a short, fat stem and end. They are also heavier compared to lowland bananas of the same size. Internally, mountain bananas have a rice-yellow flesh, whereas lowland bananas have a milky white flesh.
